Health and Wellness Fridays – Eggs

Good day to you all on this wonderful Friday afternoon. 🙂  I hope your day is off to a great start.  Ideally, you would have had breakfast already which may or may not have included our hot topic today – eggs!  Eggs are not only nutritious but they are also a cost-effective and versatile food.

Nutritional Profile

Eggs are an excellent source of choline. They are also a very good source of selenium, vitamin B12, vitamin B2, biotin, molybdenum and iodine. They also contain vitamin B5, protein, phosphorus, vitamin D and vitamin A, amino acids and many other nutrients.  Eggs are not just a tasty treat but a food rich in nutrients.

Did you know?

The top egg producing countries in the world are China, USA, India, Japan, Mexico, Brazil, Indonesia, Turkey, France and Germany according to Worldatlas.com.

Some benefits of eating eggs include:

  1. Reduce the risk of heart disease
  2. Rich in Antioxidants
  3. Increase HDL (good) cholesterol
  4. Support good vision and eye health
  5. Aid in weight loss
  6. Maintain liver function
  7. Reduce blood pressure
  8. Reduce risk of type 2 diabetes
  9. Support brain health
  10. Keep skin healthy
  11. Strengthen muscles
  12. Support healthy immune system
  13. Produce energy
  14. Reduce the risk of breast cancer
  15. Support bone health
  16. Low in calories

Eggs are truly an amazing food and we have a lot to gain from adding them to our diet.  Those of you who have read my seven facts would know  that I am not a fan of eggs.  Over the years however, I have learnt how to include them in my meals so that I don’t lose out from all the benefits to be gained from eating them.

Some frequently asked questions:

  1. Which is better white or brown eggs?

The colour of the egg is determined by the breed of the chicken.  There is no nutritional difference between brown and white eggs.  However, it should be noted that a hen’s diet and environment can affect an egg’s nutrition.

Some people prefer the taste of brown eggs while others insists that white eggs taste better.  The major difference between white and brown eggs are their prices.  All in all,  I think it just comes down to personal preference.  You determine for yourself what you prefer because they are both good for you. 🙂

2. Which part of the egg is healthier the whole egg, the egg yolk or the egg white?

The thing is, the whole egg is rich in important vitamins, minerals and other key nutrients so should you decide to throw away one or the other you would be losing some of the nutrients.

The white of a large egg has 60% of the egg’s total protein with the remaining 40% found in the yolk. There are beneficial nutrients found in the yolk that you would not find in the egg white such as omega-3 fats, vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, vitamin E and carotenoids.

Unless, you’re preparing a recipe that is specific about using egg yolk or egg white you should try to use the whole egg.

Some possible dangers to be aware of include:

Cholesterol – some believe that because the egg yolk has large amounts of cholesterol that it is bad because cholesterol is associated with causing heart disease.  The reality is saturated fats and trans fat are the real culprits behind elevated cholesterol levels.   If you are however, someone who suffers with high cholesterol it is recommended that you avoid the egg yolk.

Bacteria – in particular, salmonella poisoning is a very real threat.  Try an  avoid eating raw or under cooked eggs. Bacteria can enter the egg through pores in the shells.  There is more risk associated with soft cooked and “sunny side up” eggs than eggs that have been hard-boiled, scrambled, or poached.

Allergy – according to the Egg Nutrition Center , an average of two percent of the population under age five is allergic to eggs.  However, some studies suggest that most of the children seem to outgrow their egg allergy by late childhood.

Handling of eggs – any surfaces that might have potentially come into contact with raw egg should be sanitized with a solution of 1 teaspoon chlorine to 1 quart water.

Storage and cooking – avoid eggs that are cracked and have past their expiration date.

In conclusion, eggs are a good source for a variety of nutrients that benefit the body in more ways than one.  Do your research, ask questions, discuss with your healthcare provider if you have any concerns.

Thanks for stopping by.  Have a great weekend!

The Depths of Understanding

Understanding is not about ego.  It is not about who is right or wrong. It is not about who is more intelligent.

Understanding is about our ability to relate to each other or something.  It is our ability to find meaning in something, to show compassion, to empathize, to sympathize, to comfort and truly listen to each other.

What’s Up Wednesdays? #5

We’ve made it to Wednesday folks, we are now halfway through the week.  Today is a very rainy day here in Trinidad but the sun still wants to come out and play.  I hope you’re all having a good week so far and that it keeps getting better.

Are you ready to get into my past, present and future? 🙂  Let’s get into it.

What I’m eating this week:

Today for lunch, I really have no plans or favourites in mind.  You ever have days like that when you just don’t know what you want to eat.  All you know is you have to get food.

I have not eaten from Subway in a really long time so maybe I’ll have a salad with Teriyaki chicken and some extras like pineapple chunks and a Thousand Island dressing on the side.  Cookies, no thanks. What yummy meal are you having for lunch?

What I’m reminiscing about:

Music from back in the day that would put a smile on face and kept me going no matter what.  Singers like Monica, TLC, Mary J. Blige, Buju Banton, Beres Hammond, Tarrus Riley and so many other amazing people.

What I’m loving:

The music.  These days I’ve been going back into the archives and just really appreciating the music that made up a lot of my life.

 What I’ve been up to:

I’ve been researching my vacation options for the kids and I.    A guesthouse, hotel or villa it doesn’t really matter once we have access to good food, a pool or beach, air condition, TV, clean and safe accommodations, we’ll be happy.

This has been a little stressful because of the late planning either the dates aren’t available or the places are fully booked.  I’m not giving up though the search for the ideal getaway continues.

 What I’m dreading:

I have my fingers and toes crossed that some house renovations we want to do don’t get thrown off because of the rainy season. I’m trusting the Lord for good, reliable workmen and great weather when that time comes.

What I’m working on:

Too many things at the moment!  I’m feeling a little overwhelmed to be honest by all that I have going on and what is to come.  All good stuff thank God so I won’t complain.  Deep breath, chin up and forward I go. 🙂

 What I’m excited about:

I won’t rub it in so I’ll use one word – VACATION!!!!!!!!! 🙂

 What I’m watching:

I recently finished Orphan Black Season 1 and they have me hooked.  I have to go and get the other seasons if not today definitely before the week is out.  The show is going really well. What are you watching these days?  I would love to add a couple more series to my list of must watch shows. Leave in comments below. 🙂

 Who/ What I’m listening to:

Right now, Justin Timberlake Can’t Stop The Feeling.  I just love that song!

 What I’m wearing/ Let’s Go Shopping:

Today, here are my favourites from NecessaryClothing.com NYC.  I found these pieces to be fun, relaxed, pretty and sexy. Hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

1.            2.

3.            4.

  1. Flower Hour Halter Romper
  2. Striped Up Cropped Jumpsuit
  3. Palm of My Hand Maxi Dress
  4. Drop the Line Pants

 What I’m doing this weekend:

We did not make it to Chuckecheese last weekend too much to do.  This weekend anything is possible.  School is closing off this week and I know they need to de-stress after exams so I’ll do my best to bring some fun their way. 🙂 I’ll be sure to have some fun myself.

What I’m looking forward to the next month:

We usually have camp for the kids every year we do craft activities and carry the kids on outings and try to create an atmosphere full of fun and creativity.  I’ll be sure to take pictures of the various craft activities.

 What else is new?

I’m not sharing this to brag but these really mean a lot to me. I was nominated for two new awards this week Sunshine Blogger Award and the Unique Blogger Award.   It was my first time receiving them and I still feel so humbled and honoured to be nominated for these.  It really means a lot. Thank you.

Thanks for taking time to read and visit my blog.  That’s a wrap until next Wednesday.  Make the rest of the week a great one! 🙂

Life Is Not An Easy Road

It is easy to feel overwhelmed by our circumstances

After all we are the ones going through them

Although the challenges we face are different

We all want the same thing and that is, to overcome them

Although the challenges require different approaches

We all need strength of mind, body and spirit

To see us through them

……………………………………………………………………………….

The frustration and even the desperation that we sometimes feel

When the weight of the challenge seems more than we could bare

Refuse to be gobbled up by the despair

We must fight for our betterment

We must fight for our happiness

We must fight for our freedom

Let us choose to defy the odds and persevere

In spite of the difficulties

We must choose to push through

…………………………………………………………………………………

Life is not an easy road but this is the path we’re on

Don’t lose hope

Ask God for the strength to cope

Remember,  WE CAN DO THIS!

Our turn off is just up ahead.

Thanks for stopping by.

Oil and Water

We’re like oil and water,

We don’t mix

No matter how hard we try

There’s just no fix

Round and round we go

Unable to sustain any type of meaningful flow

My smile is gone and I’ve lost my glow

I think it’s time for you to go

I’ve waited too long this much I know

…………………………………………………………..

Time for me to accept

That this path I must reject

Because life is about living

And with you it feels so draining

That my head is always spinning

And it is clear no one is winning

……………………………………………………

So it’s best that we separate

Before I evaporate.

Don’t Underestimate Your Words

What words are you using to describe yourself or identify with?

Are they positive or negative?

Some positive words we can use include: adaptable, adventurous, beautiful, ambitious, amiable, compassionate, considerate, courageous, handsome, courteous, creative, cute, diligent, generous, passionate, pretty, persistent, reliable, resourceful, sincere and witty just to name a few.  How many more words can you add to this list?

Some negative words include: arrogant, boastful, bossy, cruel, deceitful, dishonest, harsh, selfish, irresponsible, lazy, unattractive, mean, unreliable, ruthless, ugly, resentful, rude, self-centred and untrustworthy just to name a few. There are so much more but why focus on the negative?

I can honestly say that I have identified with a few of these words at one point or another but I didn’t stay there and neither do you.   I chose a different path and created a better version of myself.  It did not happen overnight but each day I made a choice to improve and I did just that.

Pay close attention to the labels you choose to associate and identify with. Take corrective action where you think necessary.  Even though we aren’t perfect that does not mean we should not try to be better human beings.

Words are just words. The meaning and power words have is what we give to them.

This is important because the words we choose to identify with can either strengthen and reinforce our core or they can weaken our very foundation.

Make some time for yourself this week to write down all the positive words you can that identifies you as a person, if you’re not happy where you’re at today, you can write out words that describe who you would like to become.

Have a blessed day!  Thanks for stopping by.

Dangers Of Playing It Too Safe

Playing it safe from time to time could save us a lot of hurt in certain situations.  I used to ‘play it safe’ and still do in some aspects of my life.  However, there is a difference between playing it safe and playing it too safe.

In fact, playing it too safe is probably one sure way of increasing the odds that very little happens to you.  You’re probably wondering, how is this a bad thing and what makes it so dangerous?

Some dangers ofplaying it too safeinclude:

  1. We limit our experiences and by extension our learning.  If you are unwilling to try new things or do things differently from time to time how would you learn and grow your knowledge.  Reading knowledge from a book is great because you get a point of reference but actually attempting something or trying something new gives you that experience that you will carry with you for a lifetime – no book could give you that!
  2. We can cause others to naturally exclude us from events.  If you are invited to events from time to time and your answer is always NO eventually people would stop asking.  Of course, I’m referring to people you are familiar with and feel safe being around.  I’m in no way suggesting you put yourself in any situation that can be potentially harmful to your well-being.
  3. We let our fear of uncertainty prevent us from truly enjoying life.  Life is full of uncertainties that is a given however, if we allow ourselves to stay out or away from everything, are we enjoying our lives?  Take small steps, do little things and enjoy the air and breath that you wake up each day to enjoy.
  4. We pass on this way of thinking and living to our children making them fearful of the world.  As parents, our job is to protect our children but we should do so objectively.  Yes, we have to warn them of the potential dangers out there but we should also show them that the world still has in it good things as well that can and should be enjoyed.
  5. We limit the knowledge we have about ourselves such as likes, dislikes, true strengths and weaknesses because we don’t want to try anything new.  When we avoid anything that is new or different how do we really know if we like it or dislike it without even trying.  I’ve never done drugs but what I know of it and seen I know without a doubt that is not something I want to be messing with.  There are just some experiences we don’t need to mess with. Pick your battles, stay safe and stay smart!
  6. We can end up isolating ourselves.  Sometimes being too safe could cause us to share little of ourselves with others.  It’s okay to say hi or just flash a smile from time to time. Sometimes when a stranger says “Good morning or Hello” it is just that, they are simply being nice and courteous.
  7. We have difficulty accepting change.  We want things how we want it, the way we’ve known it and don’t want to try anything else.  It is good to change up your routine from time to time.  Take a different route home, try a different brand it is good to have options.

All in all, life is just too short to be stuck doing things one way all the time.  We are here to enjoy life, to learn, to love and share with each other while having some fun along the way.  Create memories that put a smile on your face and brings joy to your heart.  Be brave but not reckless. Share the moments with the people you love.

Stay blessed.  Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

Have a great day!
