Pain

This pain I’m feeling in my leg

Comes and goes

I’m starting to wonder

If it’s all in my head

Has time finally caught up to me

And decided to slow me down

Out of jealousy

Shamelessly attacking my knee

Maybe I’ll just put some ice on it and see

This pain I’m feeling in my leg

I’m convinced now it is not in my head

The pain is sometimes sharp, other times it just feels weak

Then I tell myself maybe it’s just my diet I have to tweak

I won’t delay in getting it checked

For without use of my knees I would probably be a wreck

No time to waste, I would put forward my case

And bravely look the doctor in his face 🙂

Health and Wellness Fridays – Stress

Welcome back to Health and Wellness Fridays!!! 🙂  Today I am going to focus on a topic we all struggle with from time to time and that it is called stress.

What is stress?

I think the most basic way to describe stress is by saying that it is triggered by anything in your life (good or bad) that you have little or no control over that you can’t but help but obsess about.  It has the power to motivate you and call you to action if you channel it properly or it can negatively affect your health and other areas of your life.

Some situations or life events that can trigger stress include:

  • Marriage
  • Job loss
  • Death of a loved one
  • Financial problems
  • Illness
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Work
  • School
  • Children
  • Divorce

Signs and symptoms of feeling highly stressed

Please note that when we’re highly stressed the symptoms would vary from person to person because we all cope differently. Some people might present only one or two symptoms while others might present all if the stress is really bad.  Let’s take a look.

Some physical symptoms include: aches and pains, chest pain, diarrhea or constipation, nausea, loss sex drive and headaches.

Some cognitive symptoms include: constantly worried, inability to concentrate and memory problems.

Some behavioural symptoms include: loss of appetite, over eating, problems sleeping, withdrawing from others, display nervous habits such as pacing or nail-biting and increased consumption of alcohol, cigarettes or drugs to help relax.

Lastly, some emotional symptoms include: moodiness, anger, irritability, depression and anxiety.

In life, it is hard to avoid stressful situations sometimes and as such the best thing to do is learn and know our own limits.  Once we’ve determined what we can and cannot handle – the next step is finding healthy ways of coping in stressful situations.

How to cope in stressful situations?

  • Exercise in any form can not only lift your mood but serve as a temporary distraction allowing you to disconnect the negative thoughts that help fuel the stress.
  • Stay connected to your friends and family – these relationships can do so much to help you relieve stress. Talk, laugh, catch up on the positive don’t allow the temporary situation to steal your joy.  The more you feel to withdraw from others is a sign that you need them even more.
  • Engage your senses – sight, sound, taste, smell, touch, or movement. Music works for me find something that works for you.  Maybe you need to join a dance class, maybe cook a lovely meal, maybe you need to use your hands to get creative, get a back or foot massage whatever it takes to get a smile on that lovely face and calm your mind. Do it!
  • Watch what you eat – a diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables, high-quality protein, and omega-3 fatty acids, can help you better cope with life’s ups and downs.
  • Get adequate sleep – the body needs sleep to recuperate so that we’re able function at our best.  Inadequate sleep can cause irrational thinking.
  • Take a few slow and steady deep breaths
  • Assess the situation – that is, (what’s within your control and what’s not within your control)
  • Address what you can and get help for the rest

Remember, this too shall pass!    Stress is not all bad, it is how we choose to handle the situations that determine how we come out in the end. We may not have control over every situation but we do still have control over how we let it affect us.

Stay blessed and not stressed.  Have a great weekend.

Thanks for stopping by:)

Difficult Moments

During our most difficult moments there is often a lesson to be learnt, strength to be gained or a new purpose or direction to follow.

In such times it is easy for us to be consumed by our emotions but it is important that we not let the pain we feel swallow us up.

If we do, we might end up missing an opportunity for growth.

Cry if you have to, talk about how you feel, take a few days to reflect if you must but whatever you do:

DO NOT SHUT DOWN EMOTIONALLY!

DO NOT BEAT YOURSELF UP!

DO NOT GIVE UP ON LIFE!

Difficult moments are just that moments! Learn from them and move forward.

What’s Up Wednesdays #9

Good night and Wednesday greetings to you all!  Sorry for the late post but this Wednesday and this week overall has been very hectic. So I’m going to give you guys the summarised version hope you don’t mind.

What I’m eating this week:

Today for lunch I had Rotisserie Chicken and Green Salad. For dinner we ate out at a place called Hayley’s. I had Grilled Chicken Breast with Mushrooms and Fettuccine Alfredo Sauce.

I love pasta dishes especially the ones with cheese based sauces. Yummy!! 🙂 The ambience was delightful, the waitress was pleasant and the lighting was just right.  It was our second visit to Hayley’s and the kids love it there.

What I’m reminiscing about:

When my clothes and my body complimented each other and there was no fighting for attention. Lately my stomach has fought for the spotlight more than it used to. The sweet life is catching up with me.  Balance is key but the struggle is discipline. I will be addressing this.

What I’m loving:

Family time! The experiences we are sharing and will continue to share for the rest of the holidays.  Once the kids are happy and enjoying themselves that makes me happy. 🙂

What I’ve been up to:

The usual craft at least until tomorrow because it’s our last day of camp. Here are some of the items we did this week.

What I’m dreading:

I’m hoping that we could get everything done in time regarding the house but I suspect we would have to put off some stuff for later in the year. I don’t want this to negatively affect the other stuff I have planned for the family. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we would be able to work around it.

What I’m working on:

Too much stuff and then again nothing I want to be working on.  You know that feeling when you have a ton of stuff to get done but the stuff you would rather do gets pushed back and the crappy stuff has to take centre stage because you can’t avoid it. It’s rather bitter/ sweet for me at the moment.  Sometimes being the “woman of business” can be very stressful.

What I’m excited about:

Can you guess? I hope you’ve been paying attention. 🙂 My VACATION!!! 🙂  Forgive me for playing that tune over and over but I’m really excited and anxious. I’ve been waiting for these few weeks like forever. No clock watching! No alarm clocks! No pick-ups and drop-offs for school! Just relaxation and whatever fun activities WE want to do. 🙂

What I’m watching:

Lately, very little television so I’m yet to start Orphan Black.  I’m focused on finalising vacation arrangements for the family so I’m spending even more time on the computer. Next year things will be more organised I promise! 🙂

Who/ What I’m listening to:

This is What You Came For – Calvin Harris featuring Rihanna.  Good music can definitely wake me up and give me the energy to work. I crash and burn once the work is done but still thank you Lord for the music. 🙂

What I’m wearing/ Let’s Go Shopping:

Tonight, we’re shopping for accessories. I visited  Brighton.com  and these are some of the items I fell in love with. The handbag unfortunately is out of stock but I still love it. 🙂

a.     b.     c.        d.

a. Rafaela Soft Tote
b. Meridian Petite Pearl Necklace
c. Meridian Swing Watch
d. Meridian Pearl Leverback Earrings

What I’m doing this weekend:

Catching up on much-needed sleep hopefully!

What I’m looking forward to the next month:

Let me put it this way hotel-food-relaxation. 🙂

What else is new?

No more than you guys already know sorry to say.  As the weeks go by this should get more interesting.

Until next week, stay blessed and remember we’re all unique and WE CAN do anything we put our minds too.  That’s what I’ve been telling myself LOL and so far so good. 🙂

Make this week a great one! Thanks for stopping by.

Obstacles

Sometimes in life our biggest obstacles are not always directly in front of us but rather the ones inside of us.

FEAR, DOUBT, UNCERTAINTY and  NEGATIVITY are all things that can hinder our progress, growth and happiness!

Take control of your life today, by overcoming each obstacle one day at a time. The only control they have over us is what we give them.

Thanks for stopping by. 🙂
