Music Reflection Mondays #18 – Christmas Favourites

Good night and welcome back to Music Reflection Mondays!  How was your day?   Was it like most Mondays, demanding all the energy you’ve got left over from the weekend?  I have no doubt that you persevered and conquered all if not most of your tasks today. 🙂

So what are we getting into tonight? Nothing too heavy, my youngest son Luke is turning 4 years old tomorrow so I’ve been busy finalizing arrangements for his big day.

As October comes to a close tomorrow, we move into November one month closer to Christmas my favourite time of the year. 🙂 The music just melts your heart and gets most of us in the Christmas spirit.

The decorations, decorating, the cleaning, the baking and cooking, time with family, the Christmas shows, the many aromas, the many memories from our past and the new ones we create in the present all solidified in our minds and hearts along with some beautiful music.

Here are some of my favourite people to listen to at Christmas time:

There are so many wonderful songs and people to listen to that it’s near impossible to list them all tonight.  Are any of your favourites listed above? If yes, who?  If not, who did I mistakenly forget?

Have a wonderful night. Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

Health and Wellness Fridays : Self-control

Hello and welcome back to Health and Wellness Fridays!  Hope you all are having a wonderful Friday. Tonight,  I want to talk about the challenges most of us have in exercising self-control especially as it relates to our eating habits.

hunger-413685_960_720

Let me first start off by saying that this is an area I personally struggle with.  I know all the right foods to eat and all the unhealthy foods to avoid and yet in spite of all of this knowledge and wisdom – it can be really tough to walk away sometimes.  I know for a fact that I’m not the only person with this issue but let’s keep the focus on me. I don’t want you guys feeling bad or guilty. So just hear me out. 🙂

Self-control means that not only do we have the POWER to control ourselves, our choices and our decisions but that we actually USE that power in our best interest.

I believe we all have self-control the challenge is applying it to the areas of our lives that we have relinquished control – for some it is their finances, others their relationships, and so many other areas but mine is junk food. 🙁

Do I have self-control? Yes! Is it effectively applied to every area of my life? No. Food is one of the most challenging areas for me. Sure, I have the good stuff like my fruits, veggies, nuts, multivitamins, and so on but I also have occasional fries, fried chicken, pizza,  and Chinese food from time to time.  I know what I have to do and yet there are times when I decide to just throw it out the door and just have what I want and not necessarily what I need.

Do I love myself enough to do better? Yes!  So what’s holding me back from committing fully to the process?  Let’s find out.

  1. Cravings – old habits where you can’t help but want what you want even after you’ve implemented new habits.
  2. Enablers – the people around me who love the same stuff I love so it’s easy to fall back into it.
  3. Self talk – where I convince myself I’m in control and I walk into an establishment leaving self-control at the door as the aroma of food fills the air.  He better not watch me crossed eyed when I’m walking back out with my fast food in tow he can pout all he wants.  🙂
  4. Emotional eating – if I am feeling stressed out  you could believe that I am going in search of my comfort food KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) or a good BBQ. It does help to be honest but I do feel guilty after so all I end up doing is transitioning from one emotion to another.
  5. Not eating on time.  This is a major factor in me making poor food choices as I let my sense of smell and sight along with my hunger pains determine what I eat and how much.
  6. The belief that because I make healthy food choices most times that  I can have occasional ‘feel good food’. Life is just too short for diet rigidity.

All of the above factors make self-control over eating habits more challenging.  How do we overcome them?

  1. Eating on time. I try to add little snacks like yogurt, fruit or even nuts to help me not feel so hungry as I’m often stuck behind a desk.
  2. Try to monitor my stress levels and try to distract myself with music to take my mind off of whatever is attempting to throw me off.
  3. Monitor the self talk. If I feel like convincing myself to go through the drive thru I would try to give myself reasons why I probably shouldn’t go – the line is just too long, the chicken might not even be fresh or the fries might be hot.  It works most times.
  4. As for the enablers, I just started saying NO especially if I already indulged once or twice for the week then anything after that is a no. I end up talking down their cravings as well. Of course, they’ll be a little disappointed and I’ll probably have to provide an alternative but at least we saved ourselves from overindulging.
  5. Cravings – I try not to stifle my urges entirely because food makes me happy. I have made an effort to regulate how often I would indulge for the week and month and try to stay within or under that goal making sure not to exceed it. Example, I might have KFC 2 -3 times for the month rather than 2-3 times for the week.
  6. Being honest with myself about what my weaknesses are and trying to put things in place to improve them for the betterment of ME.

Self-control is inside of each of us we just have to tap into it meaningfully. We all stumble from time to time and that’s okay. We need to support and encourage each other especially in areas of weakness – so let’s pick ourselves up and keep pushing forward. When we give up on ourselves self-control walks out the door.

Our health and wellness is just as important as those other areas of our lives that we apply self-control to if not more so.  It is there to protect us but it can’t work if we don’t use it.

Have a wonderful night and an amazing weekend.  Thank you for stopping by.

Tragedy

ship-1366926_960_720

In life there are going to be many things we don’t understand or like.

These events force us to ask questions like, what is the purpose of all this pain, suffering, and  loss?

And of course, the big question of, why me?

Every setback, every obstacle, every loss and every encounter we’ve had was for a reason. Yes, it hurts and yes, some of it even gets us angry just thinking about it.

Believe it or not those events are meant to get us to a specific chapter in our lives not only for ourselves but often to someone else. Our lives are much bigger than ourselves.

Understanding and accepting that, is what gives us the clarity and ability to heal and move pass those trials into brighter and better days.

Tragedy can be tragic but out of it can come strength, healing, wisdom, purpose and growth.

You are NOT alone.  We ALL have our own internal wars going on inside.  Don’t be fooled by what you see on the outside.

We need to support and encourage each other to PUSH through the pain until we get to a point where we’re in control of our feelings and it is not the other way around.

We’re ALL in the process of finding our true ourselves but some of us don’t know it.  We have to learn to forgive and allow ourselves to emerge out of our PAST into our FUTURE.

Have a wonderful night. Thank you for stopping by.

Life and Choices

ambition-73330__340

In life we all have things we struggle with.  What separates us however, is how we choose to see and handle those challenges.

Should we allow them to weigh us down?  No,  but sometimes we do.

Instead let us CHOOSE to identify our weak areas and OVERCOME them one day at a time.

So let’s agree to STOP beating up ourselves over what’s NOT right in our lives and START  CELEBRATING what is!

In life we have the amazing power called choice.  We can use it to either LIVE the lives we HAVE or work towards CREATING better ones.

We can even opt to include a third option, where we try to AVOID or RUN from our problems. I’ve tried this and I’m sure some of you have too and I for one can say that it’s only temporary.   We need long-term results.

So, what do we do?

LIVE the lives we HAVE and if we don’t LOVE them – we should at least CHERISH them. Let’s CREATE the lives we NEED and try not to OBSESS over the lives we WANT.

For what we want is not always what we need.

Thank you for stopping by.  Have a wonderful night! 🙂

Value

hands-63743__340

Value is the worth we give to something or someone.

With that said, we should NOT rely on others to validate our worth.    We must TRY not to allow other people’s thoughts and opinions to negatively impact how we see ourselves.

Value is deeper than what our eyes can see.  It goes deeper than the surface especially when we are referring to people and relationships.

Value gets its power from our beliefs.  Therefore, if we really want to grow our value then we need to grow our OWN belief in ourselves.

Value ideally starts with US.

Thanks for stopping by. Have a wonderful day!

Music Reflection Mondays #17 – The Musically Gifted

girl-1990347_960_720

Music reflection is about the love of the music and the artists who touch our hearts and saturate our minds and souls with their music and lyrics.  As I lie here tonight, I am literally in tears watching and listening to some amazing and talented performers on Most Emotional Auditions Ever X Factor Global.  These individuals are truly special and I know we are fortunate to stumble upon new talents every year and I’m grateful for that.  They were so inspirational and touching in their delivery.

Music gives us so much more than just a song – it gives us a sneak peek not only into the artist mind and heart but into his or her life at that moment of writing that song especially for those who typically write their own music.  When life is good and love is in the air we know and similarly if their heart has been broken we get that sense as well. They share a little bit of themselves with us and some a little more.

Music is a form of expression that a gifted group of people can do really well.  It does not matter if it is instrumental or vocal because it is still beautiful.   It connects us and provides us with a unique way to tap into our feelings and emotions.   It can help make life challenges a little easier. As tears sometimes flood the soul releasing the pressure that we sometimes have difficulty relieving ourselves.

Remember, to make time to stop and listen to the music while you smell the roses.

Have a blessed night. Thank you for stopping by.

Expectation

dream-2063053_960_720

Expectation without action is just a desire or a dream.

For expectations to become reality – effort, persistence and hard work MUST step forward.

So let’s try PUSHING the door and if that does not work we’ll try PULLING it!  Either way standing still will get us NOTHING.

Boldly pursue your dream if that will make you truly happy.  Whatever you choose to do,  don’t waste time standing by the door hoping and waiting for someone else to allow you entry.  They would probably be too busy chasing their own dreams to help you find YOURS.

The good news is, you have a DREAM and that is more than some people can say. All you need to do now is actively see where this desire or passion will take YOU. 🙂 So be proactive rather than reactive.

Make this weekend a great one! Thank you for stopping by. 🙂
