Health and Wellness Fridays: Importance of Sleep

Thank God it is Friday! Although every day we get to walk the earth is a blessing, there is just something extra special about Fridays. 🙂  I hope you all have a great day and a wonderful weekend.

The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) has given the undermentioned guideline for appropriate sleep durations for specific age groups below:

  • Newborns (0 to 3 months): 14 to 17 hours each day
  • Infants (4 to 11 months): 12 to 15 hours
  • Toddlers (1 to 2 years): 11 to 14 hours
  • Preschoolers (3 to 5 years): 10 to 13 hours
  • School-age children (6 to 13 years): 9 to 11 hours
  • Teenagers (14 to 17 years): 8 to 10 hours
  • Adults (18 to 64 years): 7 to 9 hours
  • Older adults (over 65 years): 7 to 8 hours

However, for many of us, sleep feels like a stranger to us because we just aren’t getting nearly enough of it.   Today, we’ll examine why sleep is important and how lack of sleep can harm us.

What is sleep?

Sleep refers to the condition that occurs when the mind and body is at rest.  During this state all voluntary movements and full consciousness are temporarily suspended.

What can cause sleep loss?

There are many factors that can contribute to lack of sleep some include:

  • Family obligations
  • Exam preparations (where you’re up burning the midnight oil),
  • Sleep disorder
  • Demanding job
  • Type of job (shift work)
  • Excessive gaming
  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea
  • Feelings of stress
  • Hormone imbalances
  • Chronic illness
  • Depression

Some possible consequences of lack of sleep include:

Some possible benefits of sleep include:

Sleep therefore, is more than just the body needing to rest.  Sleep allows for restoration, healing and balance.  It is literally, the body’s reset and refresh buttons.

However, it should be noted that although too little sleep can be harmful to health, too much sleep can also be just as damaging.  Some side effects of over sleeping include: higher risk for heart disease, more likely to struggle with weight issues, may develop diabetes, trouble concentrating and even increased risk of dying prematurely although no specific correlation has been determined.

Going forward, we should not simply see sleep as an option on your To- Do-List but make it a priority.  Of course, keeping in mind that it is not something that should be regularly abused by taking more than we need. We need to strive for balance and use the sleep guide above to help us and those we love get the rest that we need.  Adequate sleep could mean the difference between a healthy, happy life and an unhealthy and unhappy one.

Good health and overall wellness is not just limited to good nutrition and exercise but clearly our sleeping patterns as well.

Have a wonderful day and an amazing weekend. Don’t forget to get enough sleep. 🙂

God bless each of you.

FAITH is like a muscle

Thank you Lord for this new day.  Thank you for another opportunity to share, encourage and enlighten someone today.  Help me deliver this message in a way that reaches the person or people You need it to reach.  May it bless me and ALL who read it. In Jesus name, amen!

What is faith?

Faith is a gift from God.  It is that unseen feeling that can be classified as trust or confidence that allows the impossible to become possible.  Faith forces you to look beyond your circumstance and into your possibility.

clouds-2709662__340

Is faith just for a chosen few?

No! In the Bible (Romans 12:3) to be exact, it is written, “God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.”    You see, according to the Word, we’ve ALL been given faith as a gift from God.  However, although we all have faith not all of us choose to activate it.

How do we activate and strengthen our faith?

Here are some tips on how to activate and strengthen our faith:

1. We activate our faith through prayer.

2. We activate our faith by reading the Word daily.

3. We activate our faith through worship.

4. We activate our faith when we refuse to be guided and locked into our own understanding.

5. We activate our faith by looking not at our circumstances but to God.

6. We activate our faith by speaking positivity into a negative situation.

6. We activate our faith when we let go of our fears.

7. We activate our faith when we place our trust in God.

8. We activate our faith when we don’t limit or base our victory solely on what our eyes can see or what we hear with our ears.

9. We activate our faith by believing in God’s ability and His word with all our hearts and minds that He can do ALL for us that we cannot do for ourselves.

10. We activate our faith by starving our doubts.

11. We activate our faith by not allowing negative people to influence our thoughts.

12. We activate our faith by just believing.

I heard a pastor on television this morning say, “Faith is like a muscle.”  I agree totally with him on that statement, the reality is, if we don’t use or strengthen our muscles they won’t work the way they’re supposed to.  It’s the same principle with our faith, if we don’t exercise it or use it we won’t strengthen it or develop it.

In the bible, it is also written, Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matthew 12:20) NKJV

If we desire great faith and things in our lives to change or improve then we need to activate our faith, develop our faith and sustain our faith.   We have to do the work!  We have to believe and trust God like never before.  We have to read the Word and ask God to guide us and strengthen us.

As you go out into the world, what are you going to challenging your faith for today?  Healing for your mind, body and spirit; restoration of your finances; healing for a loved one; promotion on the job; maybe it’s employment; or a home. Whatever the desire is on your heart use your faith to bring it to reality.

Activate your faith muscle, feed it and nurture it and it will take you to a whole other level in your life. 🙂

Thank you for making this blog one of your stops on this journey called life.

Be blessed.

Because of Who HE is

My Prayer:

May this beautiful Wednesday find you covered by the mercy and grace of God. May your day be filled with blessings and favour everywhere you go.  Thank you heavenly Father for all You have done for us yesterday, all You will do for us today and tomorrow.

May Your praise forever be in our mouths. As we seek You, let us discover Your love, wisdom, understanding, strength, healing and favour in our lives. May Your protection covers us and our families. May my brothers and sisters in Christ who need You find You. In Jesus name, we pray. Amen!

Here are some questions I’ve found myself and others asking:

  1. Why am I so happy?
  2. Why am I so grateful?
  3. Why am I so thankful?
  4. Why am I no longer stuck in my old ways?
  5. Why am I so different?
  6. Why is healing taking place in my mind, body and spirit?
  7. Why is there a sense of peace within me that was not there before?
  8. Why does worry and fear no longer hold me prisoner?
  9. Why am I no longer lost?
  10. Why do I cry tears of joy?

Here are my answers:

  1. It is because of who Jesus Christ is!
  2. It is because He FIRST loved me.
  3. It is because God has been, continues to be and will remain GOOD to me.
  4. It is because of His MERCY and AMAZING GRACE.
  5. It is because I now know WHO I AM in His eyes.
  6. It is because I SEE myself the way He sees me.
  7. It is because His Word has given LIFE, MEANING and PURPOSE to my spirit and soul.
  8. It is because His love is everlasting.
  9. It is because I believe Jesus Christ is MY Lord and Saviour.
  10. It is because this MIGHTY being chose to love me.
  11. It is because He truly cares about me and I know it.
  12. It is because it pleases Him when I try to BE better than I was.
  13. It is because He healed my brokenness.
  14. It is because He has given me another chance to DO and BE better.
  15. It is because walking in Him and with Him brings life and not death.
  16. It is because pleasing Him is more rewarding and beneficial that trying to please man.
  17. It is because He is the shining light in the midst of the darkness.
  18. It is because He restored what was lost and freed me from my prison.
  19. It is because He and I are now one.
  20. It is because He is Lord, Our God and I love Him!

Am I worthy of His blessing, love, mercy, favour and grace? No, but He loves and embraces me anyway.  That is good enough for me!

It is His undying love for me that has brought me home to Him.  It is His love and care for me that has me here today. It is because of His love for me that I now want to love and embrace ALL He has in store for me. It is His love for me that causes me to WORSHIP and PRAISE His name the way I do now. For it is because of His love that WE all can now have ETERNAL life, if we want it.

Thank you Jesus for being who YOU are!  I love, adore and worship You without fear.

Lord, You have moved heaven and earth to get me to this place and I will forever be grateful.  Your sacrifice on Calvary Hill would leave me forever singing Your praise.

Dear friends, this is why I now write the way I do now.  It is this understanding and knowledge that has ignited within me a need to do more with my life, my family and my blog.  The great thing is, God truly loves ALL of us.  He calls out to US everyday but unfortunately, not all of us heed His call.

I have chosen to heed the voice of my Father and came home to Him. I magnify Him because He is WORTHY.  Without His grace and mercy I would not be here.

Seek Him and embrace Him the way He has always embraced you.

As you go forth today, remember ALL He has done for you and sincerely thank Him.

Thank you for making this blog one of your stops on this journey called life.

Hope in a Hopeless Situation

back-1822702__340

What is hopelessness?

Hopelessness is that feeling deep down on the inside that tells you:

  • Don’t bother trying anymore!
  • What’s the point anyway!
  • It’s over!
  • You’re all alone!
  • No one cares!
  • Give up!
  • You’re done!

Hopelessness looks at the situations we’ve failed to get ourselves out of and convinces us it is over.  My friends, when we go through life without the knowledge of Jesus Christ, who He is, what He represents and how much He loves us, it is easy to get caught up in feelings of hopelessness.

The truth is, even in what may seem like a hopeless situation with Jesus Christ on our side, there is always the possibility of a favourable outcome.  With Jesus, there is always hope, because there is:

  • No situation too difficult for Him.
  • No problem too big for Him.
  • No such thing as impossible for Jesus Christ.

No matter how hopeless your situation may appear today, I want you to know that Jesus wants to help.  He wants to deliver you out of it.   He wants to show up in your life and do great things. Through Jesus, there is deliverance for all those who believe and trust in Him.

The facts:

  1. No matter where we are in our lives right now, Jesus Christ will meet us right where we are to take us where we’re meant to be.
  2. He loves us even though some of us don’t know Him.  His love for us is so great that He came to this world, to die for our sins and rose again so that we can have life and not death. This is true love.
  3. We have a choice to make, life or death?  Once we choose Jesus, we will not only have life but we will have it more abundantly.
  4. We must ask God to forgive our sins and surrender who we were. Choosing to walk in the truth of who we have become as we are now one with Him.

In closing, I leave you with this, hopelessness is a symptom of a deficiency in Jesus Christ.  The only way to cure hopelessness is through reading the word of God daily; meditating in it and applying it to our lives. Believing in it more than what is before your everyday senses of sight, hearing and touch.

Don’t walk around anymore embracing the lie that hopelessness teaches us instead let us choose to embrace and hold on tightly to : truth, hope and love, that is, Jesus Christ.

Music Reflection Mondays: First

california-1751455__340

Pleasant Monday Greetings to each of you! I hope that your weekend was all you needed it to be.  If not, still be grateful for what you were able to achieve. By God’s grace we still have today and God willing tomorrow. Don’t stay hung up on what did not go right. Focus on how much better you can try to make it tomorrow. 🙂

Today, I want to share with you one of the songs I love from the very talented singer and song-writer Lauren Daigle. Her music falls under the genre Contemporary Christian music.

Although I’ve only recently discovered her it is clear to me that I have been missing out.  I have just been enjoying her music, the lyrics of her songs and her voice.  The song I’m introducing to you guys today is called “First“.   I find it to be a very powerful and beautiful song. Listen to it.

This song reminds me of how important it is to seek a real relationship with God and not just turn to Him with my lists of wants and needs.

Here are some of the lyrics below.

“Before I bring my need, I will bring my heart

Before I lift my cares, I will lift my arms

I wanna know you, I wanna find you

In every season, In every moment

Before I bring my need, I will bring my heart

And seek you – FIRST”

Should you decide to listen it. I pray that the words resonate deep within you leaving you wiser than you were before. Bringing you better understanding in how we should approach God.

Seek His guidance in all you do. As we all go forth into this new week may God’s protection, favour and wisdom light the way before us. In Jesus name, Amen!

Have a blessed week.

Run Your Own Race

start-1590051__340

Life is often viewed as a race and I think that’s because we’re always looking at how well those around us seem to be doing when compared to us.  When we do this, we often neglect the beauty and the blessings going on within our own lives that we should be grateful for.

The truth is, how well we do in our own race called life is dependent on how well we handle the challenges and the lessons along the way.

Now ask yourself this:

  • How high am I prepared to jump over my hurdles to get to my destination?
  • How badly do I want to see my dreams come through?
  • What or who am I prepared to let go of to move forward into my destiny?

Based on your answers to those questions.  Here are some things we would need to do to start running our own races more effectively.

1. Seek to align our lives with the word of God. When we seek God’s word and try to apply it to our lives amazing things happen. We experience improvement in our relationships, business, workplace, our kids, our health, our thinking and behaviour as well as our finances.  God’s word provides guidance, understanding, breakthroughs, wisdom and peace.

2. Take control of our thoughts. We can do this if we stop worrying about the race ahead of us and just tackle it one hurdle at a time.

3. Focus on the race in front of you. Stop focusing on the race the other runners are running.

4. Magnify our strengths and work on our weaknesses. Stop comparing our race to the race other runners are in.

5. Stop complaining. Recognize that each race is different just as each runner is different. Each runner and race has its own challenges so count your blessings.

6. Recognize and understand that our success or failure in our race is based on the reconditioning of our mind. We have to set a right attitude, build and use a vocabulary that is full of positivity.

7. Recognize that what we choose to put our trust and faith in affects our outcome.

8. Choose to see the beauty and opportunity in it rather than the obstacles.

9. Learn to ignore and distance ourselves from negative people. Don’t allow their noise to distract or discourage you.

10. Lastly, recognizing that falling from time to time is part of the process and is therefore normal.  Remember, the real winners at the end of the race would be those individuals who got back up and kept running till the very end.

No matter what your race track in life looks like, trust that God is in control. Understand that all you need to do is tap into His strength and not your own to finish the race.

Like a race car on the track when it stops for the pit crew to make sure everything is in order.   We have a pit crew there for us also. God the Father, Jesus Christ His Son and the Holy Spirit. We’re not alone in our race although it may sometimes feel like that.

action-1867014__340

God is always there cheering us on every step of the way. We have to merely ask for His intervention and hand control of the steering wheel of our lives over to Him.

We want God to just get us to the finish line without having to stop, learn, fight or overcome anything.  God loves us far too much for that.  He wants us to grow and overcome our weaknesses.  He will hold our hand while we learn, lift us up when we fall but we have to still do some of the work.

So run your own race and don’t focus on anyone else. Trust your heavenly pit crew to see you through.  God wants to help us in every area of our lives but we have to ask for His help which is the easy part.   The challenge comes when we have to let go of the steering wheel of our lives and sit back.  When we learn this, something amazing happens – we see life in a whole new way.

track-meet-79602__340

So trust Him to see you through to the end. As you run your race and I run mine let us make every effort to learn, grow and enjoy the good that is in our lives. When the challenges come just say,” Lord, I know you got this!

Thank you for making this blog one of your stops in this journey called life.

Have an amazing weekend! 🙂

Health and Wellness Fridays: Benefits of Forgiveness

Welcome back to Health and Wellness Fridays! Today we’re going to be looking at the health and wellness benefits of forgiveness.

forgiveness-1767432__340

What is forgiveness?

Forgiveness, is the action or process of verbally and emotionally releasing yourself or someone from a wrong that was committed.  It compels us to ‘let go’ of what was and make a conscious decision to move forward.

Why is forgiveness important?

Let’s look at this from a biblical standpoint.  Here are two verses that stress the importance of forgiveness:

  • Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord has forgave you. (Colossians 3:13)
  • For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive you your sins.  (Matthew 6: 14-15)

What can unforgiveness lead to?

From personal experience, unforgiveness can eat you up from the inside out. It can also promote the following side effects:

  • Feelings of anger and agitation especially whenever the guilty party is in your presence.
  • Have you in a state of emotional bitterness.
  • Leave you feeling upset with the world.
  • Steals your joy and your ability to truly enjoy your life.
  • Increase blood pressure.
  • Increase stress levels.
  • Puts a strain on your heart and mind.
  • Shorten your life span. The constant stressing out  and anger has the potential to trigger other aliments in your body which can make you sick.

Some benefits of forgiveness include:

The truth is, the act that brought us to this place of unforgiveness was terrible and unfortunate.  However, the place of existence that it keeps us in if we let it, is much worse.

The message today, is to start the healing process within yourself – no amount of veggie smoothies or lemon water can remove the bitterness trapped in our hearts.  If true health and wellness is what you’re looking for – start from within that secret place.

hug-1315552__340

Once you have done this difficult and yet so simple act, I believe your life will improve. Your health would improve along with the other areas of your life that unforgiveness has placed a barrier of progress on.

My prayer:

Thank you heavenly Father for Your forgiveness and mercy towards our transgressions against You and our fellow man.  Thank you for loving us through our stubbornness and ignorance.  Thank you that we have life today and another opportunity to make things right within ourselves, the person who may have hurt us and the persons whom we may have hurt along the way.  I trust that as we choose to forgive and let go of ALL the hurt and pain that we held close to our hearts that we will see and feel Your healing touch in our mind, body and spirit. We receive this victory over unforgiveness. In Jesus name, amen!
