Health and Wellness Fridays – Baking Soda

Welcome back everyone! This week on Health and Wellness Fridays, we are looking at baking soda.

Baking soda, I understand is sometimes confused with baking powder.  Although both products have they same fine white powder appearance and both are used in baking they are two chemically different products.  How so?    Baking soda is a base – it is alkaline. Where as, baking powder is a mixture of baking soda and a dry acid like cream of tartar and sometimes cornstarch. Hope that helped.

With that said, let’s get back to baking soda.  Baking soda is a white crystalline solid.  It is a salt that is composed of sodium ions and bicarbonate ions.  It has a mildly salty and alkaline taste.  Some other names you may know it by include: bicarbonate of soda, sodium bicarbonate  and even cooking soda.  They are all the same product.

Baking soda has been around for many years.  It is a common product that is found in most households.  Baking soda has proven itself to be a versatile product that is not only useful in the kitchen but other areas of our lives as well.

Until a few months ago, I would not have dreamed of putting baking soda in my drinking water or even applying it occasionally on my teeth or even on my skin.  I did a bit of research and some of possible benefits to be gained convinced me to give it a try and I have no regrets so far.    Let’s take a look at some more uses and benefits of using baking soda.

Some added benefits of using baking soda include:

  • Cancer Prevention
  • Relieve itchy skin
  • Relieve sunburn
  • Relieve bug bites
  • Relieve heartburn
  • Relieve indigestion
  • Relieve ulcer pain
  • Improve kidney function
  • Tooth whitener
  • Artificial tan remover
  • Soothe razor burn

How I use baking soda

Like most things in my life I try not to over indulge in any one thing.  Hence I try to use when possible naturally based products on my skin and in my body such as: aloe vera, honey, lemon juice and more.  However, I would admit to the occasional junk food now and then. Nobody’s perfect. 🙂  Enough about my eating habits.

Here  are some of the things I have actually done with baking soda:

  • Added it to my drinking water
  • Used it along with lemon juice to whiten my teeth
  • Added it to my shampoo while washing my hair
  • Added it to my foot bath.
  • Used it as a face and body exfoliator
  • Added it to my laundry

I’m yet to make my deodorant or toothpaste but it is something I’m willing to try.  When I do I’ll let you know how that goes. 🙂

Here are some possible side effects of  consuming baking soda

Baking soda is fairly safe to consume.  However, there are certain medical conditions and instances when you should not consume baking soda.   Let’s take a look.

  • People on a salt-restricted diet should avoid consuming baking soda.
  • Anyone suffering from low calcium levels, high blood pressure, heart problems or kidney disease should consult their doctor before using this product.
  • Before using this product, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have: pulmonary edema, congestive heart failure, severe kidney disease, severe liver disease , high sodium levels, swollen ankles, legs or feet.
  • Pregnant women and nursing mothers should avoid it unless directed by their doctor.
  • If you notice more serious side effects such as nausea, weakness, slow breathing, vomiting, mental changes, unusual weight gain, or swelling of the hands, ankles or feet, contact your doctor.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you experience chest pain or seizures as these are rare but very serious side effects.
  • Although very serious allergic reactions to baking soda is rare. Should you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, such as:  severe dizziness, trouble breathing, chest tightness, itching or swelling especially of the face, tongue or throat seek immediate medical attention.
  • Sodium bicarbonate lowers potassium, it can cause abnormally low potassium levels in some people.
  • Baking soda can decrease the effectiveness of certain drugs that require stomach acid to work so be sure to consult your doctor or pharmacist on how to manage this possible interaction before using it.

In closing, baking soda is a great product that can be used for many things.   However, when it comes to its consumption be sure to talk to your doctor first to see if ingesting baking soda is right for you and how much is safe.

  1. We have used baking soda for bug bites and stings since I was a child. I am definitely going to try some of your suggestions. It always amazes me how many terrific benefits come from something as simple as baking soda! I wonder if there is a way to use it to help with odor in shoes?

  2. Thank you, I try to do as much research as I can coupled with some of my own experiences where possible. Baking soda will not whitening your teeth overnight but it will brighten and whiten your teeth over time.
