Health and Wellness Fridays – Lemons

Happy Friday to all of you!  Today I am introducing something I would like to call,  “Health and Wellness Fridays”.

Every Friday I would post an article highlighting information on different foods that we sometimes overlook or underestimate that can add value to our lives in ways we did not imagine.

You guessed it, today we’re going to be looking at lemonsA lemon is a sour citrus fruit.

It was only about two years ago that I discovered that lemons although sour had various health and beauty benefits other than just for making lemonade and cooking.  Since then I use it daily and even introduced it to my family who can attest to the benefits they have received from using it.

There is a wealth of information online about the benefits of lemons some even backed by scientific research other benefits not so much but I don’t think that should take away from the good that lemons can do for your overall health.

Here are some benefits of adding lemons to your daily routine:

Health Benefits:

  • Alkaline your body (restore balance to the body’s pH)
  • Supports weight loss
  • Boost your immune system (helping you fight off diseases)
  • Great source for potassium (supports your heart and brain)
  • Aid in digestion
  • Regulate blood pressure
  • Anti-cancer properties (some studies have shown that cancer cannot thrive in high alkaline environments)
  • Detoxify the liver
  • Regulates bowel movements
  • Relief from colds and fever
  • Kidney Stone relief
  • Dissolve gallstones
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Reduce gout pain
  • Aid your metabolism
  • Freshens breath
  • Soothe a sore throat
  • Fights gum disease

Beauty Benefits:

  • Helps fade scars and aged spots
  • Decrease the appearance of wrinkles
  • Radiant skin

Important:

  • Lemon juice is acidic and this can weaken teeth enamel over time so it’s important to dilute it in  water.  Drink it preferably with a straw.
  • Serving size – I personally add half a lemon to a glass of water or the whole lemon when I am using my large water bottle (based on the size of the lemon). We sometimes get really big ones here.
  • Drink it first thing in the morning before breakfast.

Some people suggest putting slices of the lemon in the water to drink is best. Be sure to squeeze them first though. Whatever, method you choose I hope you start using lemons more.

Do you use lemons in your everyday life?  Did you find this informative and useful?  I would love to know below.
