What is a father?

A father is more than flesh and bones

He’s not just someone who buys you

Occasional ice cream cones

He is there in every way

To guide, protect and teach you along the way

…………………………………………………………………………..

To him you’re more than just his son or daughter

You’re his flesh and blood and that’s all that matters

If you need him, he’ll be there

He always show you that he cares

……………………………………………………..

He makes time to be apart of your life

He provides reassurance through all the strife

You are not just a financial obligation

But a responsibility that he accepts

A part of his life without regret

……………………………………………………..

Sadly though, this is not the reality for many

Fathers like this you can’t buy with money

Such fathers are so few

But I’ve been lucky to meet one or two

…………………………………………………………………

These men love and adore their children

And they’re not afraid to show it

Because they want the world to know it

They’ve shown me that there are still

Great father out there

…………………………………………………………………..

As they embrace their roles

And watch as the young lives they’ve touched unfold

They walk in pride and with each stride

They know inside that they were there

…………………………………………………………

Always willing to make the time

To invest in your kids

And make them shine

We appreciate and salute you 🙂

To all the fathers of the world who go above and beyond for their children we celebrate you.

  1. Thank you so much for reading and commenting Maggie. I’m sorry that I did not see this sooner. Your comment was sucked into my spam folder which I don’t usually have a problem with so I missed it. I really do appreciate you taking time to read and comment. Make today a great one! 🙂

  2. I’m sorry to hear that Cheila. Some of us have dads who are present in our lives but are not apart of it while others are lucky to have fathers who are very involved in every aspect of their lives. Then we have those dads who some of us never get to know for one reason or another. My childhood was not perfect but I’m grateful for what I did have. Thanks for reading.

  3. Cherylene, this is a wonderful tribute to fathers everywhere. A father is not infallible and in being so he doesn’t expect his children to be perfect, even though he knows they are. His unconditional love allows and welcomes their mistakes for he knows though experience the value of mistakes. Thank you for sharing this wonderful poem.

  4. I’m sure that he would be very proud of the young woman you have become. I’m glad that he was one of extraordinary fathers. Thanks for sharing Mbalenhle! 🙂

  5. That was very much like my father. I am proud of myself for finally accepting his death and I have mastered the art of being there for myself whenever I am feeling unhappy. Thanks for this Cherylene ?
